Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA)

This course covers the basic skills and knowledge required to provide patient care in multiple settings. It includes concepts of patient-centered care; safety; diversity and cultural competence; health promotion and maintenance; and teamwork and collaboration. Course modality will include asynchronous lecture, in-person lab, and on-site clinical instruction. During the laboratory and clinical experience, students will apply the foundational scientific principles, theories, skills, and behaviors of a nursing aide practice. Prerequisite: Must be 18 years of age or older and must provide documentation of a passing score on the qualifying TEAS Exam or a passing score on the basic competency exam that can be taken before registration (to schedule this exam, please contact Melissa Roxas at ;roxasm@sunysuffolk.edu); current BLS certification; background check through TruView; and medical clearance; all prior to start of first clinical day. Required materials: Sivvan Unisex Scrubs Classic V-Neck Top and Drawstring Pants Scrub Set, Ceil Blue; white closed-toe shoes and a watch with a secondhand and CoursePoint Enhanced for Lippincott Textbook for Nursing Assistants, 6th edition by Carter, ISBN: 9781975218775. Suggested materials: stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. This course has a total of 120 hours for completion (90 hours didactic/lab, 30 hours in clinical).
