Figurative Oil Painting – Part 1: Introduction to Materials and Classical Techniques
This hands-on course introduces the fundamentals of oil painting through direct observation. Students will learn safe studio practices, paint handling, brushwork, and color mixing using a limited palette. Core techniques include underpainting, working from tonal masses, and composing through large shapes. Subjects include still life and portrait. The course emphasizes observational painting while developing confidence in handling materials and composition. It is designed for beginner and intermediate level students. Students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies. A supply list will be sent to the students’ college email address before the start of the course. (15 hours, 6 meetings)
